My Master Bathroom part 1

January 7, 2010

Hi everyone

It's Winter, the holidays are over and I need a project. I'm feeling that urge to be creative so I'm taking on my master bath. I need to get this done before Spring so I'll be able to concentrate on the outside then. My  master bathroom has been begging for my attention and frankly I can't stand looking at it anymore! The space causes me stress every time I walk in to it!

I've started with my vanity. It is your average builders grade vanity which I would love to change but can't afford what I really want so I'm making due. What is good about it is it has one drawer on each end with a large cabinet underneath for towels. Even if I could change it I would be opening up a whole can of worms because I would have to continue the tile that was not put underneath it since the vanity I would like has legs. Too much trouble when all I really don't like about it is the color. It was originally oak laminate, then I painted it black during a weak period when I thought I wanted to have a more contemporary look in my bathroom. I also painted the walls tan, hated it (too oppressive), had too much grey in it, tried to alter it by adding white horizontal awning stripes, still too boring, added colored stripes taken from the window fabric, now too contemporary. So I've decided to  paint the vanity with a mahogany  wood faux finish  which will match my bedroom furniture

I started by pulling a base color out of the sample wood which was a terra cotta color, then I added 3 different brown glazes over that and a little black. I can't believe how good it looks. Just like the real deal! Now all I have to do is polyurethane it and get some pretty pulls. I'm replacing the Formica top with carrera marble. My floor tiles are a black and white marble like porcelain cut on a diamond pattern so it will all go nicely. Go to my slide show page to see pics, not able to add them here. Thanks.
